Barret Robbins’ struggles with bipolar disorder and substance abuse have delivered him to bad places: He famously disappeared on the eve of the 2003 Super Bowl, and two years later was shot by Miami Beach police during a violent struggle.

On Friday, the former Raiders Pro Bowl center took his lumps again, accepting a five-year prison term after violating Miami-Dade probation yet again, the latest after a Texas arrest on cocaine possession in February 2010.

Robbins was surprisingly upbeat. “I’m happy to have a resolution,” he told a reporter as jail officers fingerprinted him. “It’s kind of a relief.”

Robbins served 146 days in jail before being transferred to Miami-Dade. With credit for time served, he’ll spend at least the next 1½ years in state prison.
