Tom Cable discipline still a ways off

The NFL continues to keep a very close watch on the Tom Cable situation, especially now that Raiders defensive defensive assistant Randy Hanson has told police he suffered a broken jaw after being struck by head coach Tom Cable.

Cable has not discussed the incident, other than to say “nothing happened.” Hanson was injured during a confrontation in training camp on Aug. 6.

But even if Cable is charged by police, the NFL will not take any immediate action.

League officials tell me that while they are monitoring developments, they will not render any decision on a possible fine or suspension until after the case is completed. In other words, Hanson’s testimony is considered “a development.”

As one league official told me to put the situation into context as far as the timing of any potential NFL discipline: “It’s not over until law enforcement says, case closed, one way or another.”
