The vote on a new NFL commissioner could come as soon as tomorrow.

The league’s 32 franchise owners are scheduled to meet this afternoon in Chicago to hear presentations from the five finalists chosen by an eight-owner search committee to succeed retiring commissioner Paul Tagliabue. The owners also are to conduct question-and-answer sessions with each of the finalists, and they plan to vote tomorrow or Wednesday.

It takes at least 22 votes among the 32 teams to elect a new commissioner. The finalists are Roger Goodell, the NFL’s chief operating officer; Washington attorney Gregg Levy, the league’s chief outside counsel; Cleveland attorney Frederick Nance; Robert Reynolds, the vice chairman and COO of Fidelity Investments; and Mayo Shattuck III, the chairman, president and chief executive officer of Constellation Energy in Baltimore.

Goodell has been the front-runner since Tagliabue announced his retirement in March.
